Is a Paternity Test What You Need?

A paternity test is the process by which the paternity of a person is determined through the use of DNA testing. This can be done at any age and can determine without a doubt those who are not the father of the person and with great certainty those who are. These tests are often used when a court is in need of evidence showing paternity. They can also be used if a woman is unsure who the father of her child might be.

A paternity test can be obtained privately and will cost anywhere from £281 on up depending upon who you use for the testing. Paternity testing can be obtained by contacting your local Citizen’s Advice Bureau or by contacting NHS at 0845 4647 to find a tester. It doesn’t take very long, and normally there is a very limited amount of medical supplies needed.

A paternity test can be done prior to the birth of the baby through blood testing from the pregnant woman, the amniotic fluid by way of an amniocentesis or from tissue removed from the placenta.

The Human Tissue Act of 2004 state that the testing must be done with the permission of the man as well. The testing will not be concluded without the sample from the man either by blood or with the cheek cells.

Paternity testing should not be considered prenatal until having the advice of your physician. This is a serious test and the physician should help you to determine if it is safe for you and the baby or not and at what point. Additionally, if you are considering obtaining a paternity test, those involved should really consider visiting with a counselor. The results of a paternity test can be life changing and being prepared for that can be a difficult task. Deciding to get a paternity test is a serious decision to make and you should be prepared for the results.
